Uncertain oilcheck on Polaris Sportsman 500 EFI

Hi

I have a Polaris Sportsman 500 EFI 2007. I find it difficult to check the oillevel with certainty. To me it seams like the temperature of the oil gives different results on the dipstick. If i let my mashine stand overnight in cold weather below freezing point and then, according to manual check the oil level by first running the engine for 20-30 seconds the level on the dipstick is between min and max. But if I run the mashine for an hour and then let it rest for one and a half hour so that the oil pours back from the tank but still is warm and then perform the same oil level check again the oillevel is above max on the dipstick.

Can someone help me get any sense out och this? What is happening and shall the oil be hot or cold when checking the oil level?

Jonas

On my 05 500HO I check the oil like the manual says, start it for 20 - 30 seconds, then shut it off and check it, it is always a little above the full mark so I figure that it is good, don't worry about it.

Check it when it's cold. When oil gets hot it expends. That's why you have more oil in the tank after you drive it.

Thanks for reply. I got a bit paranoid abot the situation because a was worried the engine was burning oil when i got differnt results from the dipstick all the time. Appart from that the oil expands when its warm isnīt also likley to belive that the oil pump doesnt pump cold oil as fast as warm oil and therefore the level in the tank is lover after only 30 seconds of pumping whith a cold engine?
