New GPS Setup with Droid X

I've got one of those jobs that requires me to always have access to my phone. Unfortunately, that's not conducive to riding so I'd put off purchasing my Polaris Sportsman for years. I finally got tired of my job running me so I just got a plan in-place, purchased a new 2011 550XP and went to work.

I wanted to use my Droid X as its has all my applications including my GPS using Back Country Navigator, e-mail and music.

I have a setup that allows me to mount my Droid in a secure RAM Mount and have all the features of the phone at my fingertips.

The phone is semi-protected in an Otter Box Defender Case - Not completely waterproof, but a good Ziploc bag over it will protect it when it rains or I have mud. The case has allot of protection including a screen membrane built into the case.

I mounted it tonight and went for a ride over some very rough terrain. The mount is very rigid and everything worked like a charm.

I can also run my 3.5mm Jack from the phone to my MSA Sordin electronic headset and listen to music and when a call comes in, I don't miss it.

Hope this might help someone in the same situation~

Best,

John

Nice setup. RAM mounts are well worth the money.

Great thread! That is what I was planing on doing with my Droid 2 Global. I run with the Collett communicator head sets so everything runs into my helmet via bluetooth. I also want to find out if I can use VV mapping with the Droid. If so it will be perfect!

Looks great!!

I looked into using my iPhone as you are. But much of my riding is in northern Maine and service is spotty at best. So no service no GPS.... I may do it anyway as I do ride in other places but still undecided

The ram mounts are great. It's what in using on mine too!

My thought is to somehow mount my Droid to the small lock and ride shield. I am going to use the Droid car mount since it locks the phone in place and charges it at the same time.

Well this thread got me thinking. I took my mount from my truck and tired it. Looks like it will work fine. Not sure if I should mount it to the shield or to the pod?

That looks awesome. I do have some vibration with it mounted on the bar so I'm not sure if you will see more or less mounted on the POD.

My only concern mounted high on the bar like mine is that in the event I roll the machine the phone is going to be toast. Stuck in the middle of nowhere, no phone ---hmmmm..... Maybe a prepaid cell in my pocket????

One solutions gives way to other problems!!!

CW - the gps on the i-phone and droids is independent of the cellular network. If the i-phone can "see" a satellite, it will lock on and use it, otherwise it will use the cellular system for location. I use mine in the woods and on the lakes all the time, no cellular service most of the time. The only gotcha is if you have one of the earlier i-phones that does not have a gps antenna in it.

Mine is a 3Gs. Not to old but not the newer4 either. That's good to know

Thor I mounted mine to a longer SS bolt. I put in the LnR windshield piviot.
I picked there of the "ball"s off eBay. It was under ten bucks each. Works great also allows me to mount one to each machine and that way I can move GPS and ram mount to any machine.
