Wink Looking a Dakota Pickup...

I had a new one back in '95 until the neighbors drunken kid backed into it and totalled it in 1997....

I need a pickup and am seriously considering a SLT, 4WD, V8, 4 DR.

I know they made a body change in 2006, so 06/07 are out. But a 2004, 05 and 2008 are what I would be looking for.

Didn't the 04/05 get 5.2L magnum engines (318) and the '06 up got 4.7L ??

What do you know, what have you herd, what can you offer??? ALL comments welcome!!

Hey CW -

I had exactly what you are looking for at one point. I think it was a '06 but can't remember for sure it did have the 4.7l V8. Man, was that a perfect intermediate truck. Loved that one. It'll haul a quad easy if you have stock tires but sits sorta weird with aftermarket.

Only sold it to buy a Ram 1500 SLT to pull a 30' trailer.

Wholeheartedly recommend getting one.

My buddy had one for awhile. Sold it with 100k on it. Never did anything to it but regular maintenance. It was the 94 style. Not sure about the 4dr style you are looking at, but his had a larger bed than an S10 or Ranger.

I had a friend with a 2004 and it was a pretty nice truck. definitely had plenty of power with the v8 in an intermediate size pickup. iirc it had the same towing capabilities as my 05 z71.

I think they discontinued the 318 in 2001. I bought a new Ram 1500 SLT 4 DR in 02 and that is what i was told. Was skeptical about the longevity of the new 4.7L V8 Magnum but it has been a very good motor so far. 167,586 miles & no problems, no oil usage & more power & snap than the 318. The 318's where bulletproof. Traded in an 86 (318) with 278,744 milles on it that i also bought new on the 02. My brother bought a used 04 Dakota 4 DR it also had the 4.7L in it. For some reason his wife didn't like it & traded it 8 months later.

My thing is this... I need a good tow capacity. I don't "really" need a full sized truck. Around here the Dakota is nearly 10K cheaper for the same year and similarly equipped full sized pick up. It's NOT a big difference in tow capacity.
Next year we will likely have a 102"x18' alum trailer. Its just over 900# with a 7000K cap. (6K of machines + the 1K for the trailer.) Should get 5 machines on there. The Dakota has seating for 6 (5 more comfortable) and the bed will accommodate all the supplies needed. Likely only use it for 4 machines, but possibility of one being a RZR is something I need to keep in mind. (Hence the 102" width) So 4 machines at 800# each, + the trailer is about 5K. That should be comfortable for the Dakota.

The good: The V8 Dakota is rated @ 7000#. Fuel mileage is rated at over 20 HWY. Its got 4DR and real seating for the back seat occupants. V8 power to get things moving. Easier for momma to maneuver. (Smaller size) NO stick shift for momma to ruin the clutch on...

The bad: 5.25' bed, NOT available in a standard shift, V8 mileage... (In my mind, Trucks and Sports cars have a stick )

I THINK its what I need... Just want to be sure....

I would consider the ram 1500 with the hemi, I had a 09 1500 sport and it rode like a wet dream, all kinds of power, and awesome interior. Ram has some good deals out right now.......no charge hemi upgrade, $5500 cash allowance, and 0% financing. I traded mine in because I need a heavy duty truck, bought a cummins 2500 and I love it! I know you don't need a full size truck but once you drive or ride in the newer 1500's you will fall in love, plus the new hemi's get 18 to 20 mpg.
