iPhone iPod GPS App
Anyone use an iPhone GPS app?? I've been looking into these as an alternative to buying a handheld GPS and was wondering if anyone with experience could post up.
It seems like MotionX GPS is the most popular and at 2.99 I can see why but GPS Kit is gaining popularity as updates come out. I am really only looking for mapping capabilities so I don't get lost when exploring new terrain, "crumb-trail" type features if you will.

I have motion x on my iPhone and I use it all the time and I think it's an excellent program for the price. The problem is if you loose cell coverage. The maps are not stored locally on the phone so, you need a cell signal to update the map as you move. I would stick with a real GPS unless your sure you'll have coverage. You would also need to pretty much keep your phone on the charger at all times.
There is a free program called all trails that might be pretty good for bread crumb back tracking.

I just downloaded and tried out EveryTrail for my iPhone. Works very nicely.

The gps apps are good and all but I'd highly recommend you get an actual mapping gps. It will work so much better and there won't be any doubt or chance at all. I have an iPhone 4, motion gps, and I always take my etrex mounted to the bars with a ram mount.

I have the I4S and I would strongly reccomend Everytrail.com It maps out every move you can take photos and video while you map and it marks where every video and photo was taken and put it together and makes a slide show/ move , than you can share it and people can seen and use your map and you can see there map. works great.
Here is the first one i did...

Thanks everyone! This really helps. Everytrail seems really neat too, thanks wheelieman for sending that link. Love the pics along the trail like that. I know I should buy a real GPS, but right now I'd rather spend the coin on some skids. I just want something to map so I can find my way home. I've actually used the maps function and compass to get myself out of a jam so I know most of the areas I ride have some signal.
I was concerned about how much battery life it used too, so I might have to get a 12 volt charger if I am going to use these programs. Just curious, does the everytrail suck up the battery like the motion x does?

I ran Everytrail for about 4 straight hours and it didn't use up much battery.

EveryTrail looks pretty sweet...I was testing GPS Kit on my iPhone for a bit. I mainly liked the fact that you could download the maps to the phone so cell coverage wasn't an issue.
I found that the iPhone's GPS isn't quite as accurate as I'd like and it definitely gets REAL spotty under tree cover. I gave up on the iPhone for trail use and sprung for the Garmin Montana 650t...based upon what I've read that should do the trick for me.
