Question Starter Motor cycle question...

A friend of mine is making officially the "jump" to two wheels.

We have ridden dirt bikes many years ago. He had a bike for a year or so and rode on the street with a permit but never got his licence. Now he wants a licence and a bike. We have a pretty extensive test here with lots of riding and thinks a light nimble bike would be best. He is thinking enduro because of the familiarity with dirt bikes and there nimbleness and light weight.

I'm telling him this may be the case, but he will very soon tire of that bike for cruising... something we do allot of. I'm telling him look for a used 500 or 600cc jap Cruiser. Later, in a year or three he can sell and get the Harley he really wants.

He is a bigger guy a bit bigger than me @ 6'1" & 245#.

I could use some more opinions... What would you guys recommend to him...

An enduro is gonna suck at cruising. But having said that, I've had friends who rode from Alaska to Patagonia on DR650s. I'd suggest a Suzuki SV650 a naked sport bike. They are pretty lightweight and very nimble and cheap used. Weight might be an issue though. I've also seen a lot of larger guys ride Suzuki Bandits because they are pretty large and powerful and is still a sport bike.

He should take the test on his own motorcycle, whatever he is very familier with.
In our state testing facility, when taking the riding test, they don't allow highway pegs, their feeling is you won't be able to react in time and lay the bike down.
Your friend should do some checking as ours offers driver education courses(with their motorcycles),throughout the summer, and if you pass it, they will waive the driving test.
A 750 or 800 would probably be better, there's plenty to choose from and would be easier to resell.
