Gas cap removel

I have currently taken all the plastics off my 550 to give it a good clean and look over everything...but to remove the front plastics I needed to take of the gas cap and the piece of plastic the goes into the black rubber hose.I am having trouble getting the piece that has the threads on it for the gas cap to twist off of the plastic .I do not want to put a hole or a crack prying at it....has anyone done this before??and how did you go about it....

I want to do this so I can reinstall the gas cap while I work on my bike..my gas is evaporating.I tried a plastic baggy with tape and the fumes just pushed it off....

I have asked this question in another thread under maintenance and repairs.but with over 200 views no one seems to want to reply with any info in regards to this.

try something like, a bag, with a filter inside, make a hole in the bag (small) put the filter on (double it so its really thick) the hole and glue it there and try again...

another idea would be to do the same with a Boston valve... (big valves that come with inflatable tubes or inflatable mattresses)

or you can rig up some BOV (blow off valve...)

all this seems complicated to me really... id just pump out as much fuel as i could, just leaving 1/4 of a gallon ( 1L ) in there and add stabil... and redo the baggie trick with a small hole...

i have not seen anyone do this, nor know how to set it there without braking it...

hope i helped with some ideas.....

If I'm understanding you right, you should loosen the clamp holding the hose to the adapter then turn the adapter to remove it from the plastic and the hose. Once you have the plastics off then reinstall the adapter and tighten clamp back up to save fuel. May be neccessary to use an awl or screwdriver to get the hose loose from adapter fitting (like removing a radiator hose that has glued itself to radiator fitting). Buddy

Thanks guys I got it....I have the gas tank plum full to prevent any condensation in the tank from happening while it sits for the winter....I filled it with 92 from esso and used sea foam....I'm new to this ATV and working on your own toys....so some things I do I have a feeling will not make sense to others....The plastics were very cold and unforgiving...I turned the furnace on in the garage b4 I went to work today and it seemed to thaw out the plastics and make it easier to work with..

thanks for your help..

just for the sake of another way to go.. I simply loosened off the clamps on the rubber hose that runs from the cap to gas tank it'self and removed the whole thing.. With the tank full no gas leaked out.. I just covered the opening to the tank with clean plastic and put a rubber band tightly around it..
I was working at twisting off the threaded part and just didn't want to scratch up the under side of the plastics or break something by pushing on the tabs to get it loose so I did it this way.. All told it only took me 30mins to strip the thing naked.. I'll do it a couple times a season now that I know how easy it is..
Soooo easy to clean and service with the plastics off eh?!..

for the little trouble of taking the plastics off.Soooo worth it for cleaning properly.....I used my air hose to blow out all the crap,I got half a 5 gallon pail full of dirt, sand and sticks...And I took it to a car wash b4 winter and thought I did a good job...
