America vs Canada

his was a radio conversation that took place between a U.S. Naval ship and Canadian Maritime contact off the coast of Newfoundland. It's not a joke but it's still funny.

Americans: Please divert your course 15 degrees North to avoid a collision

Canadians: Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees South to avoid collision.

Americans: This is the Captain of a U.S. Navy ship, I say again, divert your course.

Canadians: No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans: THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS,THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES TO THE NORTH, THAT'S ONE-FIVE DEGREES NORTH OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THE SHIP.

Canadians: We are a lighthouse, your call..............

I have had this story that I use as a sermon illustration for about 15 years, I first heard it as a kid 50 years ago only I think then it was a battleship. Funny, and makes a good point about thinking we can throw our weight around when it is really God who hold all the cards.

I guess the conclusion is that US citizens should NOT use "American" as their nationality (even their passports don't recognize it), at least in the strict sense, in the same way as the French won't use "European" to describle their nationality. However, it has been generally used and accepted because the US didn't invent a word to acurately identify themselve and had to resort to a wider geographical term. However, it is only orally instead of officially and legally...
