Front end lift 2005 Sportsman HO
Anyone had any luck with raising the front end of sportsman to get more clearance? Purchased larger tires and the fronts are very close to the fenders. Would like more clearance.

How hard is it to install HD springs, and how high will it raise the front? About 2" without a winch? I'm interested in getting some maybe.

From my experience the only way to truly lift a bike is to put larger tires on the bike. However, to give yourself clearance for your tires, you can do one of two things; lift kit using a spring spacer and shock spacer underneath the strut, or install the hd springs. Either way you will get clearance. I put the lift kit under my bike and with 27" radial tires it still rides close to the stock ride. The hd springs will stiffen up the ride. Good luck with whatever you choose. Con

HD springs are easy to install with basic tools and a jack. Took me about 45 mins and I didn't even have to use a spring compressor. I could have done it quicker if I'd had a better jack. Just remove the storage box, loosen the top nut using two wrenches. One wrench on the top of the strut rod and another on the nut. Jack up the front end and they should come out of the brackets. Undo the nut that holds the spring retainer. Remove spring, put on new spring, and reassemble in reverse order. Be sure to note where the plastic and rubber spacers go and put them back in the right place. Also, once the struts are loose, be sure not to angle them out too much or you could separate the cv joint.
The advantages are an increased height (varies by model, mine raised up over 2.5 in), better ride, and better/easier steering. I have 27" tires and could easily fit 28s.

So true. I find it funny that people spend thousands of dollars to put a lift on their truck for "clearance" but without fender trimming, can't put on tires that are large enough to really make a difference. Then they wonder why they get stuck in the same holes that others do. Without bigger tires, the axles and a-arms will still drag the mud/rocks and get hung up.
