foot brake question
just came back from my first ride on my 08 sportsman 500 and coming down steep hills the back brake didn't do much at all, i was trying to make the rears lock up and i couldn't, so i ended up having to use my brake lever. could this mean i need to replace my rear brakes already?
also wondering if people have ever changed the foot paddle, i found it hard to find sometimes and my boot would get caught in the plastic

No completely normal. Rear brakes on any machine have very little stopping ability. All the weight goes to the front. They also do not want you to lock up the rear tires with the rear brake, because then you lose your steering ability, and you start to slide down the hill without any control on the machine. Its really there to keep the machine from speeding up some, but not stop it. Its normal, it was engineered to be that way.
The front brake lever activates both the front and rear brakes together when you squeeze it. 60% stopping power to the front, 40% to the rear.
I think you would have to do a custom foot pedal to change it. I dont know of any aftermarket company that makes different ones.

mine was kinda sluggish too when i got my machine. topped off the fluid and bled just the foot brake and it'll lock up the rear if i really step on it hard now.

I find this kind of interesting. My 08 500 does the same thing. Will kind of slow you but wont lock up the back wheels for nothing. I have been meaning to try to bleed the rear and maybe see if they will adjust up some. The rear brakes on my 04 700 will lock right up if I stomp on them. I kind of think there needs to be a little more from the foot petal than I get.

You can also try adjusting its tension before change the brake pads.
