Weak Rear Brake

Hey guys, I just bought my Xplorer and noticed that the rear brakes were worn in the rear. I replaced the pads and bled the system. Now the rear brakes are pathetically weak and can hardly begin to slow the bike down.

If I use the single handlebar lever, the rear has plenty of stopping power.

Is there a chance the rear master cylinder is dead?

Try to bleed both lines and also check the adjustment knob.

Sorry I haven't replied back, I've been swamped with work. It's been a few months since I did the brake job but I'm fairly sure I bled both lines. It's out pushing snow right now but I will take a look at it again this weekend to see if I missed something.

Did you bleed the brakes by hand or did you use a vacuum bleeder?
I had an issue with my rear brake using the foot pedal a while back. It was the same type of issue.

After searching on many forums, it seems like it is a bad brake design where if you get some air in the line, it does not bleed out very well. Something to do with the brake line being up higher than the cyclinder.

After trying to bleed by hand several times with no positive results, i tried using a vacuum bleeder and all of a sudden the rear brake works again. ..........
I was suprised on how much air was in the rear brake line.

Hope this helps.

rear brake

I will certainly give it a try, it's better than buying a new cylinder at 150.00 bucks. Thank you for the reply.

There is a ton of information on this topic all over the forum but no real good solution until i saw this thread. I'm gonna use the vacuum bleed. I have also thought of relocating the master cylinder and the res. to see if that gives me more pressure. I don't wanna spend any money on this but I gotta have more brakes for a 700lb machine. This is the only complaint i have with polaris.
