Which rear shocks will interchange with early trailboss?

Actually I have a 1985 Polaris 3-wheeler but its the same as the early trailboss's (85-88 for sure, probably newer).
My rear shock is a bit bouncy. I don't want to spend a lot so I'm looking at buying used on ebay. So my question is what newer model rear shocks will interchange? I'd like to go with about as new as possible since I'll probably have a better chance of getting a good one.
Here's one from a 1999 325 Trailboss.
1999 Polaris Trail Boss 325 Rear Shock - eBay (item 190501872109 end time Feb-20-11 15:05:09 PST)

Here's one from a 400L.
Polaris 400L 2x4 Rear Shock - eBay (item 260710427094 end time Feb-18-11 06:08:34 PST)

Will either or both of these work?

Go to an online parts site like babbittsonline and look up the part number for your shock. Then run a search for that part number. That'll list every model it's used on.

I tried that with service honda before starting this thread but when a part is obsolete they don't list the number. I had not heard of babbits so I just checked that out. For the 1985 Trailboss/Scrambler they list the whole shock/spring assmebly as one part number. When I go newer each peice is seperate so I'm comparing apples and oranges. Even if this would have worked out I'm guessing the part numbers would be different even if the shocks would interchange. What I mean by that is I'm sure between 1985 and 2000 some minor change to the shock would have been made such as an updated seal, better bushings etc. And I'm guessing one change such as these would result in a different part number even though the shocks would still basically be the same.

OK, I just tried what you said about seaching by part number. It does list a part number for the hydraulic portion of the shock for all years so I went with comparing that.
The number for my machine is 7041156, it says it fits 85/86 Scrambler and 85-87 Trailboss. It is obsolete.
But if I go up to 88 Trailboss I get 7041207, which is 1988 only.
If I go up to 1989 I get 7041218 which is subsituted by 7041448. The 2 number combined list to fit just about everything from 1989 to 1998. I went even newer and get a similar story.
I'm hoping someone knows what fits from experience.
If someone knew if the rear shock from a 2000 Trailboss would fit a 1987 Trailboss that would be great.

PM blueline15 with your part number. He works at a dealer and can probably look up the superseded numbers for you. That way there won't be any confusion about whether a newer version would fit or not.

Thanks for the heads up, I send him a PM.

Through this ebay acution I found that a 1996 Magnum has a 16 inch shock and the part number is 7041447. My shock is 13 inch so that will not work.

REAR SHOCK 1996 POLARIS MAGNUM 4X4, SUSPENSION - eBay (item 290525722250 end time Feb-20-11 14:27:44 PST)

I believe part number 7041448 is what I need since it fits Trail Boss 1989 through 1999 and a bunch of other models. I just need to figure out what the measurement on that shock is to be sure. I found some on ebay and asked the sellers so hopefully I hear back from someone.

I have a 92 Trailboss 350 4x4 that I am parting out. The rear shock is bad but I will give you some measurements this weekend. I will have to take it off. I need to finish stripping it down and make a trip to the scrap yard with it.
I also have a rear shock off a 1995 400 xplorer 4x4 that is bad. I will check it out also.

Im sorry Blown331, I cant get dimensions of the various shocks. Its just not something Polaris gives real accurately. I think your best bet is to shot around the years you have been, and just ask for a measurement on each potential shock. is that 13" with the shock off of the bike?
