i am working on my 05 800 sportsman i have a stripped bleeder on the rear caliper. it is the caliper thats stripped not the bleeder. any ideas on a cheap fix? or just bite the bullet and spend the 200 for a new one?

How do you know which part is stripped? I purchased my 05 Magnum 4x4 from a guy that had it serviced and was told the "brake pad housing needed replacing because the threads for the bleeder screw pulled out". Sounds Hebrew to me. I put a socket on it and it loosened like it was supposed to and brake fluid came out. Good luck with yours. My foot pedal still doesnt work.

Try tapping it out and then put plumbers tape on the bleeder screw. Worked for me.

I second halfa12pk's solution, tap it and tape it...

The brake caliper is the assembly which houses the brake pads and pistons. The pistons are usually made of aluminum or chrome-plated steel. There are two types of calipers: floating or fixed. A fixed caliper does not move relative to the disc and is, thus, less tolerant of disc imperfections. It uses one or more single or pairs of opposing pistons to clamp from each side of the disc, and is more complex and expensive than a floating caliper. A floating caliper (also called a "sliding caliper") moves with respect to the disc, along a line parallel to the axis of rotation of the disc; a piston on one side of the disc pushes the inner brake pad until it makes contact with the braking surface, then pulls the caliper body with the outer brake pad so pressure is applied to both sides of the disc.

Well, sometimes nothing goes right on a beautiful day for riding. Seems a small leak developed for the braking system. I have bled brakes before so I know a bit how much pressure to put on the wrench for the bleeder. My main question, you suggested to tap it out and put plumbers tape on the bleeder. What size are the threads? I tried tapping it out with a 1/4 by 28 tap but the bleeder weeps anyway. Is it possible to use a larger tap and use the bleeder to match those new threads? Do you know what size is best as I really don't want to purchase a new capiler. thanks for reading
