Do you have 3 or 4 brakes?

I just picked up my new 850XP and it only has 1 brake and caliper on the rear. Is that correct? The brochure says that the 850 XP has 4 wheel disc brakes... This is starting out not good. The owners manual fell apart the first time that I looked at it and the license plate light wiring melted with just 3 miles on the odometer. The transmission shifts smoothly and it does not engage until you touch the throttle.

2009 XP's had two rear brakes. From 2010 and later, there is only one brake on the rear. Even though many tech sheets say two. All 2010 and laters only have one brake.

Sorry to hear about the other stuff. Sounds small luckily. The dealer can get you a new manual, and they should redo the wiring under warranty for free.

I went threw the same thing with my 550.....the specs on Polaris web site and brochure clearly say 4 wheel disc brakes....the way I took that is there are 4 brakes not 3 with a locking rear axle...they need to reword there own specs to clarify what they are selling....

I dont believe there is a brake light switch on the rear brake...someone with an XP might be able to confirm this for you though.

as skizmo said, the rear axle is locked, so when you are stopping one wheel, you are effectively stopping the other wheel too.

My 2011 800 does not trigger the light with the foot brake.

Even though the the rear axle is locked, I still feel an initial pull when hitting the rear brakes.

Thank you all for your help. Today was my break-in ride and we did just over 140 miles of various terrain and speeds. Man, this thing is fast and so comfortable. The easiest way to relate riding it would be like riding a jet ski - smooth easy to turn and tons of power to pitch it sideway at any speed. It was a blast....
