Sportsman 500 HO suspension and rear brake
Hi,
Fairly new to ATVs so dont have much experience and would appreciate your response. I bought a used 05 Sportsman 500 HO a few months ago. Now has about 150 hrs and 750 miles. Every so often if feels like the steering is very loose. Hasnt happened much but when it does it feels like there is a lot of play in the steering and the front end is moving around by itself. Kinda scary on a steep gravelly trail this week. If I stop and then start moving again it usually stops. Was reading another post about spring sag. My front wheels are both tilted in at the top quite a bit. Thought this was how the Sportsman was but maybe wrong. Could this cause the steering problem?
Also quick question about the foot brake. I know this is a backup brake but I have to stand on mine to get any braking. Is that normal?
Thanks for any help.

The back break has a resavuar under the seat make shure it has fluid in it (dot 4) and jack the front of the bike up in the center so bolth front tires are off the ground then grab the tire and give it a shake. Wile shakin it you should be able to see if anything it loose. It could just need greasing or some bushings let me know what you find ill post up a link to free pdf manual for you in a few.
Pardon my spelling

Actually bought it about a year ago. Had just under 500 miles and just under 100 hrs. Paid $3000. Mid summer seems to be the best time to buy a used one.

Check and make sure your tie rods are in good shape. Like ebaysnyper said check for play. tie rods are the last thing you want to fail on the trails.

The rear brake sounds normal. When just applied by itself, without the front brakes, it doesn't give all that much stopping ability.
Things that can cause steering problems:
Tie rod ends
Wheel Bearings
Ball joints
A-arm bushings
The front end sag is normal. If you want to straighten it out, the HD springs are $50 for the set at the dealer.
