Coil spring install

I just got my rear HD springs and I'm looking for guidance regarding a DIY install. I'm brave enough to move forward on my own, but thought it best to ask for info first.

2005 Sportsman 700 EFI

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure that you can find a how to video on Youtube. I have seen one somewhere. It might have been a Highlifter video.

I know you can use rachet straps to do it. And they used 4 sets I think.

Good luck!

I have seen photos of the ratchet strap trick but i don't like the looks of it. You can go to Oriley's and rent the strut tool from them for free. Makes it go easier and safer.

Is a 'strut tool' the same thing as a coil spring compressor? I was going to pick one up this afternoon and do the install tonight.

Also, I'm wondering if I need to completely remove the shock or if I can get by with just disconnecting the top mount and swinging it out.

They are the same. there are different styles but they do the same job. It's been a while since I did mine, but if I remember correctly you can just swing the top out. I'd have to look at mine when I get home to refresh my brain.

Wink Danger (Ratchet Strap)

I wouldn't suggest the ratchet strap idea. They are very dangerous when it's time to release it.One poped loose on me when I was mounting tires after it began to seat the beed.It cut my wrist open, took (7) staples to close it up.There was a 1-1/2 gash in my wrist and 1/4 in. deep. You could see the tendon in my wrist.Like they say pay the deposit at O'Riley and do it safely.Ride hard,SAFETY FIRST,Mike

After trying several compressors I ended up just taking the shocks and springs to the local powersports dealer. They called me an hour later and had the HD springs on the shocks. I'll finish up the install tonight. Thanks to everyone for their input.

@lost cause: the left-side shock can be done by just swinging it out...but I would'a had to remove the muffler to get the right-side one to swing out.

Good to hear you got it tackled. It almost never goes as smooth as you would like it to. I remember removing the shock now because I also put the lift on along with the HD springs.

I hope you don't mind Gururror. It looks like your set, instead of another identical thread, I'll add to yours...
I'm doing my rears this weekend...

But I got started tonight...Gotta wait a couple days for the paint on my springs to harden... But I took maybe 30 minutes to get the shocks out, the old springs off them and everything cleaned ready for install of the springs.

Here is my bench and YES you NEED spring compressors!! I had to compress the springs a couple inches to get the keepers off, Then once I released the compression they grew a good 4" past the seated length! DO NOT TRY THIS WITH OUT COMPRESSORS!!

Here is everything out of the quad ready to be cleaned.

Here they are after some Simple green, a brush and some water...

I have to get the muffler off yet so I can clearance the fender bracket where it vibrates against the muffler.

Then as I said, I am painting the springs. I bought the High Lifter brand as they where in stock and 25$ cheaper than the EPI's. I would have spent the extra coin, but some here I believe said High Lifter doesn't make springs and has EPI make them for them... Only down side is the color... YELLOW! YUK... I have four coats of Rustoleum Hammered Blk paint on them. Come Saturday it should be sufficiently hardened not or mark too badly when I put the compressors on them...
