850 xp & touring brake life?

Its the end of the riding season for me, so I figured I may as well look at what I can do while my touring is up on jack stands with the wheels and the skin off.. I have 800km's on it and noticed for the last 150 to 200km's that I'm getting some squeaking in the brakes now.. No grinding, just the high pitched squeaking that comes with pads that are getting low.. If I had to put percentages to my style of riding, I'd say 30% agressive with lots of hard braking and 70% slow sight seeing type riding..
1st, is this premature wear in your opinion?.. Doesn't really matter I'm just curiouse what you all think.. I know the stock pads aren't great.. How bout' the calipers, are they known for wearing prematurly or is it just the pads?..
How hard is it to replace pads yourself? - Any unusual tools required to do it?.. What are the steps to replace the pads yourself.. Done lots of tinkering around with cars etc, just never done brakes.. Any thoughts are appreciated..
