Fuel and water packs

Resurrecting and old post:

It's very stable and I have been riding with the packs empty to ensure that heat won't be a problem, so far so good.

The mount is a standard Roto-pax mount cut down and redrilled with a 14" steel plate welded to it. If I take of the rack extender, I can still move the mount and run the packs vertically or horizontally and use full lock and ride system.

Attachment 7834
Good clearance at the top and bottom of the tanks.

Attachment 7835
Looks clean on the quad and doesn't stick out too far.

Thanks for all the great info on this site.

I'm looking at taking Ron's idea to the next level and having a nice 1pc stainless bracket fabbed up. Plan would be to carry one gas and probably one water can. Both 1 gallon for the ease of installation. I do think that the 1.75 and 2 gallon cans might fit the Touring models with the passengers seat in place, but would require a bit of a rearward shift.

I believe my brother has the larger Rotopax on his touring with a similar setup. He goes by MTNBKR. If you search his posts I believe he has pictures and some info on how he did it. It works well, been riding quite a bit and they stay put.

OK got it. I found his post, but no image. His setup sounds a lot like my design. I sent him a PM.

Interesting idea for the Touring. Does anyone know the part number and for that mount?

I fabricated a couple of brackets and mounted the Rotopax mounting plate to them. I then used the double Rotopax clamps and have a large fuel pack as well as a large storage pack. The small green Plano ammo box fits the lower deck notch area perfectly and is used for tools.

This I like. Up away from the exhaust. Any chance you could take some pics of your bracket set up?

Did you drill and mount?

Is the ammo box metal or plastic?

In order to make the mount truly robust, had to add plates to the tubular metal subframe under the composite deck. I then chose open spots in the composite deck and bolted the aluminum brackets to the plates underneath (second photo). I first tried Kolpin expansion anchors (first photo) (similar to the Polaris Lock & ride toggles) but they didn't have enough holding power due to the cantilevered load of the Rotopax containers. I also added a support to the rear bumper to take some of the cantilevered load (third photo). In hindsight, the bumper brackets may allow use of the expansion anchors only eliminating the need for the additional plates in the subframe.

The ammo box (I think they call it a field box) is plastic and waterproof.
