Hello, New to the forum, looking at buying what I believe is a 1996 Polaris Sportsman 500. The VIN is 2967921. Is there anyway to make sure of the year? Does this have the engine braking for going downhill with the auto or is it to old? Thanks in advance.

You should have a Model tag near the gear shifter that begins with a "W" the two numbers that follow it is the year model. I don't think EBS came about till around 1999 I think.

It is a 1996 Sportsman 500 Model W969244 and it did not have EBS clutches.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. I found it, not sure if I want to buy it or not. It needs a rear right axle shaft that is completely missing right now and a battery for sure but dont know if it needs anything else. The guy wants $500 for it.

If you can do the work yourself there's a lot of room for $$ on parts before you get to what it would be worth if it didn't need repairs. Sounds like an excellent candidate for a project bike if the motor is in good nick.

First thing you need to do is thoroughly check the ATV to see if it's worth buying. Search the forum. Tons of info on where to get parts.

I have a 1998 Sportsman 500 4x4 that I am parting out. I have a left rear axle. I think its the same as a 1998 I will have to look to see. PM me if interested. Make me an offer. Shipping will cost around $20-$25
