2010 polaris 500 H.O idle issues

Hope someone here could help me out. My buddy has a 2010 500 sportsman and the problem we are having is after riding it dies at idle. we checked the plug, air filter and tried to adjust the carb but the idle screw would not turn. so we adjusted the throttle cable and got the RPM's to 1350-1400 which is good according to the owners manual. this was all done last night , this morning he starts it and rides for awhile now the idle is at 1700 and the slightest adjustmennt of the throttle cable it dies out. only thing we havent done is take the carb apart and clean any help would be sweet. thanks in advance

Alright I will try that again but when I say hard to turn I mean hard I was afraid of breakingthe cable. Its the weirdest thing I never seen a Carb not adjust right but thatnks ill try again

I agree, try again with the idle screw. It's not supposed to turn easily or it would vibrate out of adjustment. You are asking for a runaway ATV if you use the throttle cable to adjust the idle. IIRC, throttle play is 1/16" to 1/8" and the idle speed is 1200 +/-100 rpms.

Did you check the throttle position sensor up by the thumb throttle to make sure you have the right amount of cable slack? If there is not enough it will sense a stuck throttle cable and it will die at idle. You have to make sure the 2 contacts don't touch when you let off the gas and it returns to idle or it will die. It has nothing to do with the set idle speed.

Did you check the throttle position sensor to make sure you have the proper slack in the cable. If the slack isn't right and the 2 contacts touch it thinks you have a stuck throttle and it kills the bike when you let off the gas and it returns to idle.

Sorry for the double post. My wifi is giving me fits and I didnt know the first post went through.

2010 Sportsman HO, Throttle sensor position

I was having an issue with with my choke not working and once i did get the machine running it quit everytime i tried to idle. Your advise was right on, the contacts in the throttle control were touching. Easy fix, thanks.
Ice fishing on Mitchells Bay today, great weather at last but thick ice and few fish, try again tomorrow with a machine that is working the way it should.

Good deal. That one had me ready to tear everything apart to figure it out what was happening until some one on here told me to check the contacts. Simple easy fix.

adjust ATC to proper specs on handle bar. It is not for idle adjustment.

Warm up the quad thoroughly and use pliers or screwdriver if you have the remote carb adjustment and adjust it there. If you don't warm it up, it will speed up when the quad is fully warmed up.

I hate to show my lack of knowledge about my machine, but can someone post a pic pointing to the idle adjustment screw on a 2012 Sportsman 500? I haven't had it long, and have yet to really tear into it, so don't know what's what on it yet. I hope I don't have to take too much off of it to get to the adjustment........thanks for helping this newbie, gents!!

2012 Sportsman 500 HO (with not NEARLY enough upgrades yet....)
