Sportsman 90...what do I need to know?

Hello, I'm going to look at a 2006 sportsman 90 that has 50 hrs on it. City dweller moved to the country and bought it for his daughter to ride. I guess the new wore off fast and he says it hasn't been rode much at all, "like new". You know, they all say that come to think of it.

Anyway, I need a short course on the Sportsman 90. Is it 4X4? The new ones are 4-stroke, how about the 2006? Any inherit problems?

Anything you can tell me would help. I've got an Arctic Cat 700, friends have bigger Polaris 4X4s but never been around a 90.

What's it worth??? He's asking $1500

The '06 was a 2 stroke and no 4x4. I haven't really heard of any problems with them. $1500 is too much, more like $1000 or under.

I own an 2004 and it has been a good machine so far. I paid $900 for mine about 6 months ago. They are not 4x4. And you would be ok to pick that machine up for between $1000-$1500. That's not a steal but a fair price. These machines are over $2400 new and not many want to spend that, so they look for used. I know kbb said my 2004 was only worth like $800 when I bought it, but the supply for a good used one is actually pretty high, and difficult to find. So, that makes these things hold their used value pretty high.

We bought a 2010 for my 9 & 11 year old daughters in January 2011. It looked great and ran great. The issues I had were the brakes and ground clearance. These aren't made for anything but smooth, dry trails.

The brakes aren't sealed, so if you do any water crossings or ride in mud very much at all you will be taking them apart each time you ride to clean them out. It's not hard to do but was a bit of a pain.

I tried to use the machine beyond it's capabilities so the ground clearance issues were really my fault. The rear rock guard is flimsy and there is no protection for the bottom of the engine. The first rock we hit bent the rock guard into the chain. I fabbed a solid piece of 1/4" aluminum to the shape of the guard, riveted them together and attached it with bolts and nylok nuts instead of just a screw-in bolt. I also fabbed a sheet of HMWV for a skid guard and riveted it to the frame with access holes for the drain plugs.

We sold it in August. Not because we didn't like it, but because my girls' riding abilities improved much quicker than I expected. Also, without more ground clearance and AWD the 90 just couldn't keep up on the rugged terrain we ride in.

The girls now share time on the 300. At 75 and 85 pounds the girls look small on the 300 but amazingly they are fearless and can ride just about any terrain I do on my 700!

Polaris doesn't make the 90 themselves. I believe it is contracted to a Korean company.

$1500 is way too much. I would say $1000 tops for a machine in REALLY good condition. I sold my 2010 for $1800 with the custom skid guards.
