gopro footage of engine smoking
this was the 3rd time out with this quad.. i bought it used.. 2001 sportsman 500HO.. i'm still getting used to it.. i was going through some mud and i thought that one of the wheels was spinning.. by the time i realized no wheels were spinning and it was just making noise i saw some smoke come out from the engine.. i'm still getting used to the automatic transmission and i guess this is a lesson learned of when to use low gear..
does this seem normal for a polaris?
is the smoke from the clutch?
thanks

I can't watch the video at work. Our computer is blocked from most social networks,fb,e-bay,you tube and such. If it's the clutch side more than likely it's the belt. Make sure you clean it up before you put it back together. You can use warm soapy water or an air hose.

I would say that was your belt. You should have been able to smell it. If you have ever burned a belt on a vacuum cleaner, that is what it smells like. Kind of similar to hot brakes. Way different from oil burning.

Ohh yeah....that was your belt. If there was ever a time to put it in low gear, that was it.

when ever you need to go slowly, and have no momentum, use low...
and when you need to rev it above 2500RPM in high(to get the atv moving) then its time for low
if it smelled like burning rubber then its the belt...
otherwise it might be water getting onto the exhaust and evaporating...

I watched the video. From what I can tell is you are reving the engine the rear tires are not spinning. So i believe you burnt your belt. Cause of this: I think water entered the pvt cover(belt cover). Remove the belt cover and check to see if the cover is warped or has a hole in it. Make sure the seal is good. Look at inner cover and make sure it's not warped. When you reinstall it I would recommend using clear silicone around the seal for a waterproof seal.

The belt was slipping real bad, most likely the seal on the cover is leaking or the cover is warped.

thanks for all the info guys..smelled like what you are describing as a belt... i went for that quick ride, got nervous after that happened, rode for another few minutes w/no problems other than the ride feeling a little rough, like when i put it in reverse in the garage i would give a little gas and the wheels didn't turn smooth if i was light on the gas,it was sort of notchy.. then i had to go to work and didn't have much time to research. also i have a manual on order so that will help with things.. i would never have thought i would have had to use low for that.. unfortunately i learned the hard way
thanks again
