Smile First Atv?

Hey all,
First post here. Have always been a Polaris fan and am looking for my first 4 wheeler. Have a few health issues so am having to go from a MX bike to a 4 wheeler. Wanting to not have to come up with to much cash so used it is. Thinking $5-6000 range.Just wondering what the best bang for my buck may be? I am looking for a 4x4. I would love a new 850 but not sure I want to spend that much. My Dad (73) has a Hawkeye and it has been a good machine. I would like a little more machine.
Thanks Jack

Hello, Welcome to the forum!

Some thoughts for you. Look around at used prices in your area, but in general used ATV prices seem to be grossly inflated right now, and many people are not budging on those prices. Its not uncommon to see people not budging on their used ATV price and its twice the value of KBB or NADA.

Which usually means you can buy a brand new machine for $1000 or less over the price of a used machine a few years old!

There's always the debate, single or twin motor, which is best for you? Thats a personal choice I don't get involved in, as there is pros and cons to both.

You've got a health amount of money for a machine though. We are starting to see 2009 and 2010 850 XPs come down to under $6K used. You might be able to find a well maintained 850XP in your price range.

You should easily be able to get a brand new Sportsman 500 in that price range, you might even be able to get a brand new Sportsman 800.

Either way, don't completely not look at brand new. Depending on prices in your area, it make more sense. Prices vary a lot right now both new and used across the country.

In my honest opinion. The best bang for your buck......A 2012 or left over 2011 brand new Sportsman 500. Its an overall great machine and very solid, its been mechanically the same since 2005 which means the mechanical bugs have bee worked out. And it will be a noticeably more powerful machine over the Hawkeye your father has.

i agree with blueline, prices ARE way overinflated.

as to what you can get is either 500, 800 OR 550XP which i would recomend out of the three......

now its going down to personal pref in either 1 piston or a twin... twin will have more torque... but will also drink more gas...
now it depends on whether you want more power or not...

depends on what you are going to use it for. trails, both will be OK (550 will have a bigger range)
if you are going to work with it, then go with the 800...
the 800' bugs were all also worked out...
also depends if you want EPS or not.....

just ask more specific questions so i could help more... i have an 800 and afew friends have some 550's so i can also tell you how it is...

Smile Thanks!

Thanks everyone!
I will look a little harder after the first of the year but so far used seems a little spendy so may try to buy new. If it is new I will be looking at an 850 xp w/esp-----I think--LOL--------
Thanks Jack

850 XP with EPS, you will be about 25 to 30% over your initial range of 5-6k.

look at a 550 XP EPS... it might be closer to your budget... otherwise if you dont want eps then go for the 800 EFI....

but honestly... look VERY VERY hard at getting a touring/x2..... more at the x2...
you never know if youll have a seocond rider... plus its more stable and better overall im alot of condition (except tight trils)
