Question Right side clicking noise?

This week while riding my quad I started to notice a strange sound coming from the bottom right side of the engine compartment close to where your right foot rests. It's kind of a high pitch clicking sound? You know when you start your quad and for about a second after it starts you can hear the grinding/clicking of the starter still engaged? That's kind of what it sounds like? Any ideas on what this could be? It still runs normal.

Check the starter Bendix gear. The one in my 08 500 rattled like crazy.

What causes this to happen?

The previous owner of mine had had it in the water. If the pull handle is not seated properly on the case when the pull rope is retracted then water can get in the pull start cover. There is a drain plug on the bottom of the cover to drain any water out. It doesn't look like mine had been used. The inside of my cover and the Bendix gear had alot of corrosion on them. I'm guessing that is what caused the gear to start rattling. I replaced it and the noise stopped. I have read of others with noisy Bendix gears.

You still could have a noisy Bendix gear.

I know, I was just saying that water didn't get in thru my pull start. I will check my gear when I get a chance. Are they hard to replace?

The hardest part is taking the foot well out so you can take the 5 or 6 bolts out of the cover. The gear rides in between to brass bushings. One in the case and one in the cover. Don't loose the small thrust washers on either end by the bushings. The starter spins the gear which then engages the flywheel.
Not hard.
