850XP start...
well i trailered my atv in to take a course, starts fine on the trailer, i let it run for 7 minutes while i back up and take it off the ramp...
i go into the lobby to fill in some papers, come back BAM it wont start, it cranks and such but doesnt run...
im getting worried here and there now...
what i do... disconnect the battery from a terminal, and reconnect it, it starts fine... did have to do the same after i shut if off (idled for 10 minutes and 3 minutes or so of riding here and there)
and had to re-do the same procedure to get it started...
just wondering what might have caused it besides the cold (-20C)
and how did the removing battery fix this.. i cant really explain ..
oh and getting the front hood off was also some trouble... the lock and rides FROZE... had to remove the top lever and pin to remove the hood...
so any ideas what caused this? and no, my 850did not have the first maint...

1st off they don't like to idle when started cold...and by that I mean they foul plugs. Crank it up, let it warm up for a minute and then ride it. Don't just let it idle for 10 minutes.
This doesn't seem to be an issue when they are warm.

well... the atv idled for 10 mins (did some throttle changes here and there for 3 minutes)
then i rode it off the trailer, up a small hill, then forward, then back ward.... so id say 3 minutes of 'driving" it...
i mean i didnt go 5000 rpm for 50 miles... but maybe did a solid 2 minutes of above 3500rpm...
the plug didnt foul as it ran GREAT afterwards....

What it does is over fuel when cold so the plugs are getting wet. You turn it off and all that fuel is in there. It never gets a chance to get off the enrichment cycle. It'll run on it but it won't restart easily. Crank it up let it warm a minute, ride it until it's warm.
OR
This is pretty common actually. The dealer can reflash or you can switch plugs to the iridium ones. The dealer won't know squat about the iridium plugs. You have to find them online or a german auto parts supplier.

thanks... might be switching the plugs soon... and when i do ill get those iridium...
im overall satisfied with the machine... just that it was a "shock" to me for it not to start...
the only problem with your theory, is that even my dealer was stumbled,
IF I DISCONNECT the battery... it STARTS RIGHT UP... like it usually does....
i dont see this happening with a fuel flooded engine,
nor with a "dead" battery... nor fouled plug...
care to explain why this is happening and how it is fixing it?

I don't know if this is your particular issue but they are known to foul plugs from quick starts and then turning them off.

thats what im saying... im 100% sure its not the fouled plug... as it worked FINE for hours after that......
and my 800 never had such problems... even if its 850 specific... it was no where near a quick start and shut down....
anyone other have some input?
and thanks you for your help and time, shore!

Have you tried adjusting the throttle slack in the bar housing?
They are real touchy about that being correct.
Also, some people reported a stocky throttle position sensor. They simply thumbed the throttle a few times and it came back inline.
