Is my sportsman 400 an 04 or 05??? Help!

I just purchased a sportsman 400 4x4. I was told that this bike was an 05, but I think this is an 04 based on the stickers and the colors. The bike is yellow with the RED suspension in the rear. How can i tell via the serial numbers on the engine what year this is? I have no title for it, just a bill of sale. I am trying to order parts for it, but I need to determine the year before i can proceed.

Thanks!

If your sportsman has the old style roundish plastic and the old H pattern shifting it is an '04. If it has the old style plastic but the straight line shift pattern with PARK in the transmission than it is an '04 1/2 model. If it has the new style square like plastic with the standard front storage compartment instead of a front rack than it is an '05. If you take your serial number from the frame, the number that starts with 4XA to your dealer they can also tell you the year.

If the head lights are rectangle then its an '04. If they have a slant on the bottom of the head light, its an '05

Someone else told me it was the 10th digit. I checked and the 10th is a "4". So it sounds like its a 2004.

You meant the 8th counting back to front.

I do the heavy line here at our dealership and I use the 8th and 10 digits. 8th is the engine and 10th is the year model, just wasn't thinking while typing.
