RotoPax on 850 Touring

Has anyone bought the 4 gallon rotopax with the 850 touring? I would like to store it on top of the front cargo bin. Has anyone tried to just strap in down without mounting the hard brackets. It looks like you could attach it at the side with some small straps to the small plastic slots of the cargo box.

You would definitely want to mount it for security, a 4 gallon fuel pack will move rapidly if not properly secured and may prevent you from being able to steer. I have mine securely mounted and have full steering ability.

Thanks. I kind of figured that (looking for cheap). Did you fabricate a metal plate for underneath the lid to secure the mounts or just drill through the plastic and bolt directly to the lid (in between the checkerboard slats)? Does the lid open and close easy enough with the rotopax mounted?

I attached the brackets to the top of the box temporarily with 2 way tape to make sure I could fully turn the handlebars and open the box. I then proceeded to drill thru the mounting holes, I trimmed the checkerboard slats where needed and attached the bolts with washers for added security. I then used a window sealant on the inside over the bolts/washers to prevent any water penetration. For added security I added a 2nd cable inside the box to account for the extra weight of a full fuel pack.

I agree with Fishy. You want it secured so there’s no way it can move. I also drilled through the box lid. I used the mounting plates from Rotopax on the inside of the lid for a good solid mount. I siliconed the holes through the lid just before installing the bolts for a water tight seal. Haven’t had any water get in the box at all.

Thanks to all. Great ideas. I specially like reinforcing the cables on the lid and using sealant to insure it's watertight. I might actually even get the universal mount, it comes with 2 of the mounting brackets and is flexible as to how you mount it and you can spread the load over more of the lid. It's only $15 more than just buying 2 of the mounting brackets. Thanks again.

how was the packs mounts on the back of the quad? I wanted to get it mounted somehow on the back, but its hard to tell from some of the pictures. What about water leaking in the front?

I mounted mine like Canonball. I used a lot of silicone sealant. I bought the mounting plate for extra stability. I used sealant all around the holes underneath the plate on the topside and all around the bracket on the underneath. I also used sealant on the screws. I'm thinking it will be dry.

I used washers out of gum.
Great. No water in the box.
