I am looking forward to the class. I have been riding since I was a pre-teen. I've been on nearly every class of machine from almost every company on the market. I crashed on many of them too. Never too old to learn.

Funny this thread was started. I just got a post card in the mail about the course. Heck, I think I'll have to take it if I get a $100 gift card! Sounds like it might be a good time anyways.

This course sounds interesting but I didn't find it being offered in Indiana. I also didn't find anything that tells me what is being taught. I did find it in Illinois and Ohio. The one in Illinois is straight west on the interstate so if I signup, that is the one for me.
Here are some questions
I am buying a used 800 from an individual instead of a new or used 4x4 from a dealer. In this case, what is the cost for the course and does the 100 certificate still apply.
Give me some idea on what is taught in the course. If it is state laws, taking the class out of state might not be too helpful.

I thought this might not be a bad idea to take with the kids. Figured we might all learn something. They do not offer a single class anywhere in the State of Alaska. Go figure. I don't have any hard numbers but I bet the state of Alaska has the highest per capita ownership of ATVs in the country. I know in most of the villages people don't own a car. It is an ATV and maybe a snowmobile but for sure an ATV because it can be used year around. The entire family piles on and goes to town. Ive seen entire families of 5 or 6 people stacked all over the top of a single machine barreling down the road. One with an infant strapped to her back. I bet they don't teach that in an ATV Safety course.

I signed up for the class 6 months ago and I am still waiting to take it. Guess they only do them once a year here.

Sounds like the course is a little hit and miss unless you live in Alaska where it is a complete miss. So far I have about 4 hours on a 4 wheeler so the course would be helpful if not to expensive and offered somewhere in the state. I am saying not too expensive because I am not buying from a dealer and am assuming there is a fee. Indiana doesn't list any within 130 miles of my home. Illinois does so I will check on it there.

Everything I have read indicates it must be a new ATV. I did find online that Polaris started the program in July 2005 (rather became a member of the SVIA). So maybe if the ATV was bought after that date and the original owner did not take advantage of the free training (not sure again if the $100 credit would apply either) it could be used by the current owner of the ATV. When you sign up it asks for your ATV's serial number along with other personal information.

It's not a state specific course. And you register using your quads VIN number. If that number has never been used at the class you get to take the course free. Even if you have a used quad. All you need to do is go on the website and check your VIN to see if you ride free. Otherwise it's like $125 bucks.
I have taken the class twice with two quads just to get the $100 bucks. It wasn't anything in there that I didn't already know, but it was fun. The instructor was cool and got to meet some other riders. In PA they even paid me 45¢ a mile to get to the course since there wasn't one within 100 miles of my house. This was in 2008. They might not be doing that anymore.
It never expires so you can take it sooner or two years from now. It's all based off your VIN number. My wife took it three years after I got her quad and I still got the check from Honda at our new address.

Thanks very much for the detailed information. I will check and see if the vin on the one I am getting has been used or not. Apparently Indiana doesn't offer the course but it is offered west of me in Illinois. That would just be a nice little trip for me so I will check on enrolling as soon as I can.
Again, thanks for taking the time to get and send the information.
