Locking front differential?

I have a 2007 800 Sportsman that I bought a couple years ago. GREAT running machine and Iíve put a bunch of hours on it riding trails, swamp and working on the farm. Itís always been tough to turn. I didnít realize how tough it was until I started riding other machines. I bought my wife a 450 Yamaha Kodiak and it has a ďlocking front differentialĒ option. It turns on a dime when that option isnít engaged. Iíve rode my buddyís 650 Arctic Cat and it turns much tighter and with less effort than mine (although my ride is MUCH better!) I didnít get an ownerís guide, but did purchase a shop manual. Itís home and Iím not. Iím sitting here wondering if Iím missing an easy option to turn off the front locking differential. Does anyone know if I have that option hiding in the buttons?

I don't believe there is a locking diff option on any year sportsman. Maybe your front diff is all messed up or your speedo is goin. I believe the speedo controls awd.

Your AWD is not working properly. Sounds like it is always engaged. Your machine should stay disengaged until the rear wheels slip. Meaning, in AWD, it should turn even easier the the "locking front diff" option because when the front diff is unlocked, it's still in 3wd. It's an inferior system to what Polaris uses.

You need to chase down the reason why it sounds like your 4x4 isn't disengaging.

I blew the rear seal on my front diff, so after a while the fluid would leak out and it would fill with dirt and mud, and then when I would take off it would just engage the AWD at any acceleration. Once I replace the front diff it was all good (got it from Babbits online for 40% less than my dealer was trying to charge) So I would change your fluid and make sure it looks good and clean, if it does then you may have other issues, if not change it out (not cheap). I do recall my 800 took elbow grease turning too but on the trails with AWD on or off there was not much difference...
