ketchemontherun, I have no idea why it happens, it appears to be a fairly rare problem. You will need a new cam, lifter and decompress spring and arm contraption, and obviously reset the valve clearances. Did your also blow a hole in the cover plate like mine did?

Same happenend to me

Mine blew a hole in the cover this weekend. If I could get the parts it looks easy to fix. I dont understand why you would have to replace the cam and rockers. Its just the dowell, release lever, spring and ball? Anyone know what it cost to have everything replaced?

If you look at the pictures I posted you will see that the dowel broke off inside the cam, if memory serves me correctly the little ball bearing had worn a groove into one of the rockers. So while we had it that far apart we decided to replace everything with new parts. I hope you where as lucky as I was and not out on the trail when it blew. I was taking mine off the trailer at home after a 4 day ride in West Virginia when it let loose. I considered myself lucky that I was not 30 miles from camp on the side of a Mountain when it happened.

Just had the same thing happen to my 2000 500 magnum. Any idea what caused it? I was full blast in some trails and didn't notice till she started knocking .

What causes the compression release to fail? That's a great question. The fact that your ATV is 17 years old and you are still driving it balls to the wall probably did not help. I'm not chastising you just stating fact;-). What I can tell you is that once the broken parts where replaced on my 2005 ATV (broke in 2010) it never had the problem again, I just got rid of that ATV about 6 months ago. I was lucky mine broke as I was backing it off the trailer one cold January morning so I only ran it with a hole in the engine for about a minute, so no engine damage from lack of oil. Wish I could be of more help but it's been to long ago to remember the fine details of what we thought caused the compression release to depart the casing.

Rebuild the old girl, if you just replaced the cam and lobes it sounds like you will only need a hand full of not very expensive parts to get her up and running again, then buy a Ranger;-) Good luck!

Could you guys put up some pictures of the broken cams and decompression shafts? I'm curious what the ends look like where they contact the decompression ball.
