Tire chains ?

I have always used 4, but I just got a set for my 13 500 HO, and there were only 2 in the box.

Who has used only 2 chains in the winter for both plowing and on the lake getting out to a hut? Did 2 work ok?

My gut just says go get another 2 as I've never ever had issues running 4.

I don't know about a wheeler, but I've run 2 on my truck. I have even run one. One suggestion. With a good set of aftermarket tires, you would not need chains.

No offence, but better aftermarket tires wouldn't make much of a difference for what I do with the quad.

Anyone run with only 2 chains?

None taken. Are you mainly driving on ice? I plow 16" of snow with my pitbull rockers and have never needed chains. The lugs are close 1 1/4". I've been very impressed with them, even on ice. Have you considered studs?

In the winter, it will mainly be ice (and snow) back and forth to the hut, up to 3 miles out each way.

Never really considered studs, always felt chains were the way to go.

I'm not worried about using only 2 chains and that somehow messing up the drivetrain (it wouldn't), I'm concerned if 2 will be enough for what I do.

I sometimes plow very deep snow, 2 feet or more, and have found chains to be a prerequisite. As I said, I've always used 4, again, wondering if 2 will do the trick?

I only run chains on the rear of mine due to limited clearance on the front. I only run them if its really icy when I'm plowing. Having them on the rear keeps the back end from fishtailing or spinning the tires too easily. With the plow, and snow being pushed, the front hasn't had any traction issues. Two would probably work for what you're doing too.

Good points on the plowing side of things. I can now see how 2 chains would work ok here.

But I've decided to get 2 more, that will make sure I can get out to the fish hut.

You won't get chains on the front of a 500. Too close between the tire and ball joints. You can get spacers for the front wheels but I don't like them.
I ran 2 years with ice screws and liked them. Before that I had a Yammy and ran chains all round. Now I'm on tracks for the ice season. Tires without chains or studs are basically useless on the ice conditions I see most often.

Really? Wow, that sucks. I always had front chains on my other quads, but they weren't Polaris's...
