bigger plowerplant into a scrambler . . .
Just joined up, but have lurked for a while, anyway I've been looking at picking up a larger sport quad (ie raptor 700r) but the new job has me in an area that i will need 4wd or i'll be walking (northern alberta, lots of muskeg). And i've looked at some renegade's but quite frankly they are more than i'd like to spend. So I've decided on building what i want (I'm not new to this so its no biggie).
What I'm wanting to do is to pick up a decently used scrambler (I can get them for about $1500-2000 in my area) and then swapping in a bigger powerplant, I'm thinking something 800cc or bigger. Now my first question for everyone is, does anyone know of someone who has done something similar on this quad or anything else? If so got any links or info on the swap? Next is powerplant selection. I've done some checking in the area and i've found varing prices on motors, but they've been in the 1500~2500 range, anyway I'm curious on what would be ideal for something like this? Perhaps a polaris indy triple (i found a fresh rebuilt for fairly cheap), or maybe just a twin 800 of sorts? Or should i maybe look into the sport bike world for something? Thanks for any help.

Honestly Im not questioning your abilities but I would FOR SURE go with the renegade. That machine is awesome. I have a polaris 850XP and it is a beast. that would also be a good option.

Renegade what?:
YouTube - ehegre's Channel
YouTube - ehegre's Channel
Did some searching last nighte and stumble across that. That thing is pretty much death on 4 wheels, and I love it lol.
I've also done some checking on picking up a used renegade and in a 600 mile radius I can't find anything cheaper that $7500, yeah I've found a few on evilbay, but they're on the other side of the country and the shipping costs would negate the better price pretty damn quick, and quite frankly thats more money than i want to spend as my comp mud racing truck needs some tranny love this year more than i need a quad woth that much coin. Don't get me wrong, if i had the cash or waas buying new it would be no question, renegade would be the quad of choice as they are awesome machines.
Also in my searches I found that used mid to late 90's 600cc and larger polaris sleds(I'll explain this a little further on) are going in the 1000 to 1500 range for good running complete machines to make this easier. So toss that in with a price of 1500 (older 400 scrammy's)to 3000 for a nice newer 500 ho (found 2 very nice units for just under 3000, and I'll be getting one of the two). So say 4500 for a quad and sled, toss in another 150 for a set of interco tsl's all around, another 500-700 for misc. hoses, airfilters, cvt upgrades (springs and belts ect), and scrap material and for less than 5500 you're looking at a machine that will run circles around a renegade, yeah it may not have some of the comforts as the renegade, but thats something i can live with.
Anyway also in that guy's video I found this one:

So it looks actually not that bad of a project. Outside of fabbing new motor mounts and getting the clutchs to line up, the most difficult part will be getting the exhaust in there and getting the carbs tucked in there nicely, it also looks like i'll need to stick with a twin as then i'd be able to keep all the plastics factory. Now the reason for sticking with a polaris powerplant would be for the cvt they use, as I bet the clutch on the engine is identical, or dang close with maybe some minor differences in the interenal like the springs and such, any thoughts on this?

Do it. Take lots of pics. I think you could do it much cheaper than that. Look for one with blown engine. Probably get for a grand. Snowmobiles are cheap now. Should get one of them Polaris sleds for 1000. I think you could do it for that. Sell rest of the sled and that will pay for the misc parts.

I could find an older used on with a bad motor, but i want to do a bit of riding till i get ready to do the swap (i'll do it in a weekend type deal, pull a sled apart look for parts, get everything together then ddo it over a weekend or two), I could probably recoupe a some costs like you said by selling the sled parts and even by selling the scrammy motor too. Plus the few scrammy's i've found already have better rubber, winch, lights, etc for less than 3000.

sooooo small little update:
humm, something doesn't quite look stock . . . .
I know, its the k&N filters, thats definately a non factory polaris item, and i have a hunch that the exhaust is from PSI pipes .

Yeah i quite haven't got the linkage put back in, there's kinda of a cyclinder in the way of the factory linkage .
I have the jets set all the same right now, haven't had a whole lot of seat time due to working way to much, and now its -30*C, so kinda hard to work on it right now to do the tweaking i need to do (bump up the pilot jets, get the wireing wrapped up for the accesories, need to wire in the voltage regulator and bridge recitifier to get the dc current to run the accessories, install the bigger fan, wire in the new autometer tach, toss on some new lights, get my 4 paddle tires mounted up for some snow runs , toss on the graphics kit i have for it).
Needless to day, she's quick .
