First Ride
I wanted to get some opinions since it has been eating at me. I have had my 850 XP for a week. Had it out for its 1st run on Monday at an ATV resort. Some areas had some thick mud which I was trying to avoid. I ended up riding into a puddle where I got hung up on the frame. Mud up a little past the foot boards. I made about 2 short attempts to get through and then winched out. Did not want to work the engine too hard.
Needless to say some of that thick mud splashed the radiator covering about 1/3 of it and no way of washing it off at the time. Later in the day (about 90 degrees) my temp light came on. I drove for about a mile and then shut it down to let it cool for about 20 - 30 min, never went into a limp mode. Started back up and rode back to camp with no temp warnings and washed it off. Cleaned everything up real good.
Anyone think I did any damage being a new quad?

I don't think you hurt anything since you let it cool down and it didnt go into limp mode

hell no you didnt do any damage
they kinda like it a little rough. you will be fine, you were smart letting it cool down, its got so many saftey features now it will shut itself down to protect itself before it lets you do any type of damage to it

The way I understand it is that the machine will shut itself down and go into a mode where it allows you slowly work your way back home. Perhaps this is something that the Can Am's do but I have heard that Polaris has similar features.

Since these are EFI, it will all be related to the ECM, and the safety limits set in the software, just like cars/trucks.

Know the feeling Bueller. Had my brand new 850 XP out for the first time with about 40 miles on it and went through what I thought was a shallow mudhole. Unfortunately it was almost half way up to the seat and yes the stock tires are bad in mud. After being winched out it took about an hour to dry out and get restarted, but I rode for another 3 hours. No problems. No water in the oil, plugs, or air cleaner. Don't care what anybody says about a Polaris, they are made to get dirty.
