Ok this is great! Chevy is my prob! I have a 1991 silverado 1500, and I just had it in the shop and the mecanic said that the reason it shoots gray/blue out of the exauhst when first started is cause the o-rings (?) need to be changed. They are shot. What does he mean and is it costly?
Thanks!

He's talking about valve seals. They are a little rubber boot or cup that the valve stem sticks through. Take the valve cover off and you can see them inside the valve springs. Common problem with older chevrolet v8's. I've done it myself a couple times. You need a special tool that goes into the spark plug hole, you pump compressed air into the cylinder with an air compressor to keep the valves from falling inside the engine. Also need a spring compressor. Oh yeah I forgot that the newer 350's had an o-ring on the exhaust side valves.

Yep valve stem seals. All those Chevys do that. Not a big problem if you are not fouling spark plugs. Go to a busy parking lot and wait for some one to start a Chevrolet truck and watch the tail pipe. If you have never done one be careful. If you loose a keeper down you engine you will be sorry.

i have a 1987 chevy 15OO pickup and drove a 1990 chevy suburban for a year, both with the same motor, 5.7 L fuel injected, and both would smoke for a split second when first started.

they both continue to run great, never notice any drop in oil level, never have plug issues, so i havent even bothered to worry about it.

drove the suburban across the country like that too, ran like a champ

Was it just me? when I seen "older trucks" I was thinking 60's, 70's or even early 80's, something with a carb and with out a computer. Good old days.

Another way to keep the valves up is pull a spark plug and feed a length of cotton rope in the plug hole, then turn the crank by hand until the piston tops out. After replacing the valve guide seal for that cylinder reverse the rotation and pull the rope out. Repeat on the next.
