Stuck in reverse
Hi guys,I am brand new to this forum and to 4 wheeling. Just came in from BACKING my 2000 Sportsman 500 through the snow and out of the woods after it got stuck in reverse. This purchase was a private sale (Friday 12/24) and is the first time I used it tonight. Needless to say there wasn't any hammering going on as we are new to 4 wheeling, actually just looking for a way to haul out firewood. The machine appeared to run OK at first, a little trouble with the 4x4 not always locking in but I assumed it was driver error. Where do I go from here? I am savvy to mechanics but was not looking for a major project right now.
As it didn't come with a repair manual, will a Clymer Manual fit the bill or is there something better?
I would appreciate any help I can get.
Thanks in advance, Stumpuh

Welcome to the forum, not sure what the problem would be but there are some good mechanics here on this sight and I'm sure they can help you out.

the cable/shifting mechanism might be frozen...try and thaw it out or follow the shifting mechanism and see if it moves closer to the trany

another thing the 4x4 in reverse...the yellow overide switch on your left handlebar keeps it in four wheel all the time just hold it in when in reverse

same thing happened to me. my gear selector box had jammed up. just unbolt it from the frame (4 or 5 bolts) and move it around to free it up, that worked for me. sometimes the pins get jammed up in there when there is too much play in your shift linkage and it vibrates around a lot. you may want to adjust them.
my belt was going bad and it started a series of problems that had to do with shifting being hard, stuck in reverse, and moving as soon as it was put into gear.
you should be able to find a link to a service manual in pdf form for your machine, just do a search.
