When you rebuilt the starter, did you make sure the bendix moves freely?

If the bendix is working when the starter is turning, it should extend and engage the flywheel. If the starter is turning, but the motor isn't turning over, you need a new bendix (often easier and cheaper than messing with the old one). You can find a new one cheap on ebay from DB Electrical.

Question thanks dwhst9

thats the silly thing about it, the starter is turning and the bendix drive is turning just not comming out and engaging the fly wheel, the spring in the bendix is good and the teeth are good.

just found the earth lead that is bolted to the top of the motor is broken so will replace and see if that helps, the starter motor might not be turning fast enough because of this
