hard shifteing

i have just recently bought a polaris xplorer 300 4x4 2 stroke it shifts hard into high gear if you shift from reverse to high it goes in ok otherwise it grinds in any help with this???

What year is it ? Does it have the low range trans? You might need to just adjust the shifter linkage. They tend to wear and cause problems.

thanks for the reply it is a 1999 and it does have the low range.it almost seems like the problem is with how the machine idles,it shifts alright when the engine is idled way down

It sounds like the exact same problem I had, I to thought it had to do with the idle and rpms. It turned out to be the linkage, sometimes it would shift no problem and other times it would grind that why I thought it had to do with the idle speed as well.
