That's what I'm Afraid of that I will try to save money by purchasing a lower end model and regreting it later.

Quite a differrence between 500/550 and 800/850. I very much agree that one does not "NEED" anything larger than 500 or so. They will get you where you want to go, spin the tires well enough to crawl in mud or over rocks. You can even tow and haul with them. IMHO larger engines simply equal speed.
I used to own a Suzuki Quadmaster 500. I could go anywhere my friends with their 700 and 800 cc machines could go. It just took me a little longer to get there. If all my friends had had 500's, we would have gotten there at the same time. I upgraded to keep pace, not because I needed a bigger machine. So I would ask yourself, "How fast do I want to go." If you ride at 70 MPH you're going to want a big bore machine. If you are happy at 45 to 50 MPH, then the 500's should be fine

In the end I do agree any machine will do the trick when it comes down to fun speec is always the big rush . I have always been a speec junkie guess I've made up my decision I also have the other side of me saying do I need to spend the extra money for a bigger motor it will be hard to decide.

I was also a 'speed demon' in my younger days. Now that I'm old and grey I drive slow and enjoy the scenery. Speed is a rush. But if things go wrong. Its also going to make the injuries a lot worse.I've been in motorcycle crashes, car wrecks, truck wrecks, and an industrial accident at work. No serious damage done. But the old bones do remind me of my past adventures from time to time. Especially when it gets cold...if you go big,be safe!
