Sounds like you have a flooded combustion cylinder. Remove spark-plug(s) and then crank. If fuel (or coolant if engine is water cooled) ejects from the spark-plug hole during cranking you either have a leaky carb (or a bad head and/or head gasket if engine is water cooled).
If fuel ejects, suspect faulty float valve and a blocked vent outlet at the bottom of the carb that allows float-bowl overflow to drain to ground via a rubber tube.
Clues to look for: High fuel consumption, smell of gas, sometimes wants to die at idle but recovers when throttle is thumbed open, and in extreme cases a gas puddle in the air-box.
Tips: Temporarily route the carb drain hose where the end can be monitored then look for dripping gas. If gas is dripping then schedule a carb rebuild.
