400 sportsman not fully engaging in reverse

Hey everyone, I am new to this forum and I am hoping you can help me.

I currently own 3 Polaris atvs but I am having trouble with my 2001 sportsman 400.

I drives great in high and low Forward gears but when I shift into reverse I get a grinding or popping noise like it is not fully going into gear. If I ease in reverse really gentle it is fine but any pressure and the popping starts.

Atv has been taken really good care of and I service them accordingly. In addition too I road the atv every day for the last week with no issues in forward high and the 4x4 seems to work fine as well.

Any ideas?

Thanks
Darin

High and reverse are on the same linkage. I would try disconnecting the shift linkage and putting it in reverse by turning the bellcrank with a pair of pliers. If it engages properly without the linkage attached then it's probably a linkage problem. If it doesn't it's a gear problem in the gearcase. If the linkage is adjusted with a bias towards the High direction(too lòng, I think) then high would engage with some travel remaining in the shifter but reverse would be missing a bit of travel to fully engage.
I would try adjusting the linkage first. Check the oil in the shifter and make sure the shifter is securely mounted to the frame.
