(Old) New 1998 Magnum 425 4x4
Hey Guys,
I'm new to the ATV World. I have been looking at quads for a few months and finally found an old 1998 Magnum 425 for sale locally. I paid $150 for it not-running. I put a little into it (new battery, carb cleaner etc.) along with a few hours of labor cleaning the carb and it started right up! It runs great!!! Started to explore the trails around my house a little and am having a blast.
The owner I bought it from said it came from Maine originally and seems to be in great condition. The plastics are all in great shape, the same cannot be said for the racks though... the rear one is crushed but the front one is great.
I bought it with 759 hours and 1461 hours on it. I grease all the fittings on it every 2-3 days (4-5 hours riding time). Is there anything else I should watch out for or maintain?
Also if anyone is around MA if you have tips on nice riding let me know!!
Thanks Everyone!!

Keep all chained lubed with some good chain oil. Aerosol cans of chain lube work great. Other alternative would be to buy a gallon of bar and chain oil. Pour the bar and chain oil in a squirt can(metal thumb pump oil can) and oil the chains with that. Keep a check on the motor oil. Make sure to check it frequently. Gas gets in the oil due to the carb flooding or not changing the oil frequently, if not the oil gets broken down. Always use synthetic 0W-40 motor oil. Polaris brand or Mobil1 is what I use. Change oil and filter at a minimum of once or twice a year. Don't forget to grease the alemite at the carrier bearing at the rear brake caliper, steering stem. In dusty environments keep a good clean air filter. Make sure to have the foam filter & wire on the air box snorkle. Also be sure to use a foam wraped paper air filter. Every so often drain the pull rope housing of water.
Welcome to the forum.

I checked the oil and had no problems the first few days running it. I checked it the other day and it was above the full line. It did no smell like fuel was in it. After running it for a while the oil seemed "foamy". I am going to change the oil in the next few days. I was wondering if anyone had any other thoughts on this.
The final question I have is that when its cold, it is very hard to start my machine. Once it starts, it runs great. Once it is running, there is a difference if I have the choke on or off, so could this be a adjustment screw under the carb? When its warm, or it is in the garage overnight, it starts right away.
Thanks!!
