Should I buy it?

I am new to ATV's but have been a long time dirt biker. I sold all of my bikes a few years ago and now think I need an ATV. I don't wnat to spend much money so I found a non running 1999 Polaris 500 Sportsman. The owner said it will idle, but not rev up. His dealer told him it needed new lifters and that would be $1500. I can buy it for $200 as is. Has anyone ever heard of lifters wearing out?

A 500 is known for the following problems: exhaust lobe wearing out on the camshaft(replace camshaft and rocker assembly), magnets coming off the flywheel. It worth more than $200 for parts. It can be parted out easy and make some money on it. That is if you know how to dissamble it and know the condition of the parts. If you know how to fix it yourself or have a friend that is an atv mechanic I would go for it.

Thanks for the info. I believe (with a shop manual) I could handle this repair. I got it started and it is popping through the air box. I am sure this is valve-train related. I understand that parts for Polaris are very expensive. How much so you think it would cost for a cam, rocker assembly, gaskets etc.?
