I'm so new I don't have one yet.

Hi all, My name is Tom and I am from Indiana. I am 62 and getting younger every day. I have been looking for a while but haven't taken the plunge yet. Just thought this would be a great place to learn some things before I made my purchase. I will probably be asking a bunch of newbie questions so if it has already been asked a million times, please refer me to the old files.

Thanks

Just as an ice breaker question,

If a Polaris 800 Sportsman from Indiana (900 ft. elevation) is taken to Colorado Springs (6210 ft. elevation) and then taken up the mountain (more elevation) what adjustments need to be made?

A sportsman 800 should be an efi ( electronic fuel injection ) machine and require no adjustment. Gotta love polaris!!

Bruce, thanks for the welcome and ebaysnyper, thanks for the answer. Of course you are right that it is an EFI machine. I wasn't sure if they might have a small computer chip that needed tweaking because of the change in altitude. That will work fine than when I go to visit my brother in Colorado Springs. He and his better half have a 700 and a 500. I have only went with him once. Up in the mountains is a great place to ride.

I hope to have my own in a couple of weeks. I have my eye on a well cared for, 2008 Polaris 800 Sportsman Touring with about every accessory already on it. My wife has some serious leg issues so I want something that will be comfortable for her and give her a safe feeling while riding. I think the touring seat with the wrap around bag and the solid grip handles will be just the thing. We aren't kids anymore so we don't get in a hurry.

Anyway, that is what I am thinking about.

Tom

If you other half isent the tallest they make extensions for the foot rest that will make her feel more comfortable.

I wanted a 500 for the fuel economy and the newer 500s do not come efi, so i got a used 07 x2. Which is fuel injected, and has a utility bed and rear passenger conversion seat built in. I have never regretted that deal, you will love polaris. Just avoid the 850 lol

Thanks for the reminder about height of the foot support being adjustable. I will definitely need to check into that. If she was 2 inches shorter, she would have to have a booster seat for the car in Indiana. I hope they make them that will set pretty high. I am rather handy at making things. If their aren't high enough, I will come up with something. A good solid place for her to put her feet will go a long way in having her feel comfortable.

ebaysnyper, that may be just what I need. I will keep it in mind if the deal on the 800 touring goes through. I should know in a day or two.

Then, I need to figure out if I can get the 800 and my Harley in my 14 ft v nose trailer. If not, the back of the truck will work. I may also have to have the Harley at an angle up toward the nose. We'll see. I also have an older 16 ft open bed trailer that would work great. I prefer the closed trailer if it will work though.

It seems like anytime you are getting something new, there are a lot of things to think about.

The 800's are great machines. The only drawback I see to the 800's is the no EPS (power-steering) option. For that reason alone I would opt for the 850 Touring. Your body will thank you every time you ride.

Good Luck in whatever choice you make. Also welcome to the site.

Hey Fishy,

I am sure you are right. However going newer and bigger with EPS make the price jump quite a lot.

That is a beautiful picture of a Touring model. The item on the rack behind the passenger seat has me stumped. What is it? It is probably something everyone but me knows but I have to ask.
