Hello from Upstate, NY

I've had a 1999 Sportsman 500 since new.

Last fall it wouldn't electric start. It will pull start (ouch). I charged the battery and changed the handlebar switch.

I checked the fuse in the pouch and it's okay. I checked the grounds and they are all tight.

Any suggestions - solenoid???

if you have a new battery, then the next thing to do is to find the start solenoid and jump the two termainals. any piece of metal, like another key will work. turn the ATV key to the on position before you do this. if you manually jump the solenoid and the it still doesnt try to start, then it is probably the starter, and more specifically the brushes inside the stater are probably wore. if it does try to start when you jump the solenoid then you know the solenoid is bad

Polaris 500 no lights, won't start

Thanks for the replies blueline15 and bruce 1200.

I jumped the solenoid and it started right up. Does that mean I need to replace the solenoid? None of the lights work though. Are there any breakers or fuses between the handlebar switch and the lights and solenoids?

Thanks to all for the replies.

I changed the solenoid and it starts but still no speedo, AWD, lights, etc.

I checked through a lot of the posts and see a lot of speedo related electric problems.

I did some metering at the speedo harness. I've got 12 volt between 1-2 as I think I should, but 17+ volts while running through 6-2. Should I suspect the voltage regulator?

I tried to jumper 5-2 but it didn't seem to work.

Is there a way to take the speedo right out of the loop so that the lights work?

Thanks again to all.
