New guy from Northern Illinois

Hello everyone, I own a 2005 Polaris Scrambler. I have a couple questions about the Scrambler. If anyone can help me out with some questions on this model I would appreciate it.

Well my number 1 question is with the rear suspension sag. I am trying to figure out if it is normal or a bad shock. Once I get off the scrambler, I can pull the rear end of the machine up approx 5". I have had people say it is preloaded, although I thought preloaded would be once somone was seated on the atv.
Please help

I have run across this from riding sleds too. I'm guessing this is only after riding the machine, not after it's been sitting? Sleds always have some sag to them after riding them hard through moguls. If you're showing 5" of sag, you may want to rebuild those shocks and possibly replace springs if they are losing strength.

agreed with snopro....5" is a bit much. also see this quite a bit on snowmobiles as well, as far as excessive sag goes. a fresh shock should have 1-2" of sag after getting off of the machine IMO. given the age it is very possible you have a worn out shock.

from the microfiche i can not tell if your machine has the rebuildable gas shock, or the non-rebuildable sealed shock. it would be pretty easy to just look at it yourself and see though. the non-rebuildable sealed shock is $93.57 retail OEM, and if its the rebuidable one, it will depend on shop rate, but should also be under $100 to rebuild it. sounds like thats what you need

Thanks for the help here guys and the pricing. I looked closer and this is what I found.
I have the non rebuildable shock. Now do you think the yellow spring could be worn or just the shock on the inside?
After the machine has been sitting for a day or two, there is about 2-3 inches that I can pull the rear up. Sounds like this is going to be normal.
After riding maybe closer to 4-5 inches on sag.
Also, I am in Illinois and it is brutally cold here, any thoughts?

Cold will not increase the sag, if anything it will help work against it as the shock fluid will increase its viscosity. I would say to replace your shock and spring, if you can only do one thing, replace the shock.

Are there any aftermarket shocks and springs? Or should I stick with OEM?

Not entirely sure which route is best for you. I would suggest checking out DennisKirk.com for replacement parts. That may be cheaper than a dealer.
