Hello from Quebec - Big Boss 6x6

Hi all,

As of yesterday I now can be a member of this fine forum !
I have just bought my first Polaris and am real happy for having finally crossed the line !

I bought a brand new 2012 Sportsman 800 Big Boss 6x6. So new in fact that I have not yet received it... That will happen next Wednesday...

I had trouble choosing among the vast Polaris line...

I have 3 sons of 12, 15 and 19 years old... My youngest is missing his right hand from birth and never could drive an ATV like his brothers could with our faithful 2000 Arctic Cat 500 semi-automatic... That's still a very useful machine but to pin a trailer every time something needed to be transported was getting on my nerves some...

Obviously, the words "sport" and "new" just wouldn't do it with my sons... The "new" aspect just wouldn't survive the first week-end...

And then I own a 75 acres piece of land on a hilly part of Quebec's Eastern Township. This land is mostly wooden with an old eastern cedar forest and a 30 years old 42,000 pine plantation on top of the mountain. It's a deer heaven land with a long winding river, many ravines, marshes, sand pits... There are a lot of fallen trees in the cedar forest that need cleaning and many dead or non-commercial white pines are also in need to be removed...

Thinking of my family's need, my need and the land's need, I started looking at the Ranger RZR 570 as it's not too wide but then I was told that it couldn't do much work... Looked at the Ranger 500 EFI but was afraid I would need more motor... In the pine trees, I just couldn't envision a 60" wide and 76" tall Ranger...

Then I began looking at the Sportsman line with first the 550 touring EPS. The EPS amazed me, with a possible mod to the throttle side, my 12 years could someday be able to drive it a bit... The touring is very nice, almost too nice... Could it handle working ? I believed the touring was going too much toward the pleasure side of atvs...

I looked at the 550 X2... This one was pretty nice, I liked it a lot but no EPS !

Thought about it some more and came back with our real needs, a work horse...

I have looked at the 6x6 sportsman for a while now. I have searched the use market for decent older ones. Very few are available, they all have older sprockets and chains and their cost was up to 70% of a new one for a 5 years old less powerful machine...

Then I went to this out of town dealer who had them all in its showroom... He was advertising pretty low prices... Thought it was a scam... He told me that his prices included transport and preparation while the prices I was elsewhere quoted didn't... That was not entirely true but still his price was $750 to $1250 less then elsewhere...

And I swallowed the bait and hook...
Mine was still in a crate so it even wouldn't show showroom marks...

And that's how I became the owner of a 2012 Sportsman 800 Big Boss 6x6 work horse...

Was it an overkill for our needs ?
Only time will tell...

Will work as a work horse ? I'm sure it will !

In the end, the worse case scenario will be that we may have to adopt more Polaris in our family...

Thanks,

Dominik aka Walterkilo

welcome,, as to your left handed son,, my (now departed)uncle had a stroke that affected his right side and still wanted to drive his sled so he had the throttle adapted to the left side,, you might check around and find someone willing to help you out with such a modification for a wheeler,,

Hosehoundfr86,

Thank you for your welcoming ! As for a throttle adaptation, yes, it will happen. What I have more concern about with is the steering effort needed to drive an ATV. My son is strongly built and has already developped a lot of strenght in his left hand and arm but he's only 12 now...

Very soon, I might look for an ATV for him alone... Maybe something sportier, lighter and simplier too... An older 250cc 2 strokes or 300cc 4 strokes... Something to call his own and to be adapted especially for his needs.

Anyhow, I believe that power steerings for ATVs are here to stay and will become a lot more common as time goes.

Thanks,

Dominik aka Walterkilo
