2010 sportsman 800 bottom end noise
Just bought a new 2010 sportsman 800 and when i engage the gear and accelerate, it is fine but when idecelerate it holds back but as soon as it begins to free wheel, it sounds like the bottom is going to fall out. A clangidy clangidy clang noise. Someone had said it was normal and the engine brake but this sounds far from normal. Anyone know what this is from? As it is the holiday here, i cant call the dealer til Tuesday but if something is wrong, i don't want to run it. Anyone? O this is my first post so thanks in advance for anyone that can help

I've got an 08 800 has the same concern on decel it rattles, from what i have come across in reading, it is the transmission chain slapping the transmission drain plug i have seen pics of the plug worn from this. I was goind to grind down(shorten) the plug to see if this noise changes. I've got 90 miles 10 hours on mine so far no problems other then this rattling..
good luck let us know if you find anything different

Thanks for the response NOP. I hope that is not the case as a tranny full of metal filings off chain slap doesn't settle too well with me. I have heard a few explainations...engine brake and the like. didn't call the dealer today but will tomorrow. Will let you know when i do and if anyone else has any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.

not yet fatz96
I haven't had another mechanic look at it yet and it hasn't gotten any better. I am now getting a wheeze or whistle noise from the engine clutch area preceeding the bottom rattle and have noticed the rattle is starting to happen even with the engine/clutch engaged. (not free wheeling) I cant imagine this is normal but am hunting now and really don't have time for it. I didn't get a response from the dealer i bought it from(they were supposed to contact polaris about it and get back to me) but they want a referral on their site... like thats gonna happen. They don't want me to rate my buying experience for them. Once hunting winds down and before the warranty is up i plan to get it fixed. To my satisfaction. Sounds like a bucket of bolts rattling in the woods. Brand new ride. Good luck with yours and can you explain how yours sounds and acts and give me the year and model. I am keeping a log of all the similar problems for future use. Thanks for responding.

sounds just like yours
Hello Ripper,
I have a 2010 Sportsman 800 EFI on demand AWD. It clanks when decelerating or going downhill, similiar to yours. It could very well be a chain slap on the drain plug. I wonder if we could place a washer or two to shorten the plug?

My dealer has told me the noise is the slack in the drive train. They all do it they claim. They did however order me the EBS clutch kit and think that this will keep tension on the belt during decent and keep the slack out of the drive train. EBS is not standard on these machines. They got it for me free of charge. I hope it helps this aweful clanking sound. What do you all think? My buddy has the 800 X2 with the EBS and he doesn't notice any clanking. Will see if it works.
