EPI Clutch KIT
I just installed an EPI clutch kit (with the help of a buddy) in my 01 Sportsman 500 HO. On the primary clutch we could either use the red spring or the orange spring. The red spring, for lack of better term, is the more mild choice. The kit says I could use the orange spring if I wanted more low end. Anyone have any thoughts, advice, or experience with the kit? Ill probably end up driving it for awhile and switch the other spring and trying it for awhile. I am running a 2 inch lift and 28 inch swamp lites.

The orange spring will get you a higher primary engagement RPM. What do you have now, with the orange spring? What was the engagement before you started? What other parts were in your kit that you installed?
Just being curious.

We put the red spring in. it is supposed to be the one with the lowest engagement. The Kit came with a red spring or and orange spring for the primary clutch, and new secondary clutch with a blue spring and new weights. I havent got to ride it enough to decide if the red spring bests suits my needs or if I should swap it out with the orange spring. I am running 28 inch tires. I mostly trail ride but I notice last week when climbing steep rocks on a trail I was lacking intial throttle response. I made it over but had to use more throttle that I would like to. I also smoke the belt twice when I got in a sticky situation (MUD). I went ahead and replaced the belt also. I can tell a difference with the new setup but have just played around with it in the yard. I hope to test I out Tues or Weds. I am trying to find a happy medium between good low end and decent top end. I really dont get the quad over 30-35 mph and was wondering if it would still get up there if I swap it out with the orange spring. Only one way to find out I guess...

35 -40 will not be an issue at all. When you loose top end we are only talking five mph or so. Also with your taller tire you cover more ground with the same RPM as before. So you will already have a higher top speed just from that. It should offset any loss from the clutch kit.
Remember a clutch kit docent change the power output one iota. It merely allows for better, tighter grip on the belt at different times. IE slowing promairy engagment wil allow engine to be better into it's power band. But it still operates with in the RPM range of the engine so it's like taking from the top and moving it to the bottom where most people need it more. The fly weights work with cintrifigal forces to grip the belt as the Rome build and better " grip" is needed on the belt.
Your on the right track. You know your machine. Go ride then change adjust and ride again. In effect your "tuning" for your own riding style. What's better than that!!
Secondary springs work with your back shift or how fast you get back in/in power after letting off.
Good luck,
CW

You won't know until you try. One thing is for sure it won't hurt and is easy to swap back if you don't like it.
Did you install complete kit?

With a 500cc motor, heavier tires and as tall as they are I would go with the orange

So might I ask what colors you're running now? I run a red primary and a purple secondary and I am not too crazy about the engagement either.
