trouble with gear selection when bike is running

Last weekend I was pulling my buddy out of a mud hole when I belt started burning real bad. I replaced the belt, started the bike up drove it around the yard then shut it off. Then i started it again held the hand breaqk to shift the gear and i heard a squel and it is realy hard to shift through the gears. I to the point it feels like some thing is going to break. if i shut the bike off it goes freely through all the gears. as soon as i turn the bike on i can switch greas. Help please.. Could this be related to the belt change? thanks

OEM? No residue of the old belt on the clutches?

Quiet simply there is too much tension on the belt right now to allow the primary clutch to freewheel at idle. You just have to figure out what is causing that.
