K&N or not?

Hey guys!

I own a Sportsman 850xp 2011.

Would you recommend replacing the stock air filter with the K&N one? (PL-5509)

IF so, why?

If not, why?

Thanks for helping a newbie in the ATV world! haha

We find that K&N does flow more air faster through, they do not filter that air very well. And on an off road machine in the dirt that's very bad. They don't filter fine enough. I'm not placing blame, but when I was working at the dealership, we saw a handleful of Polaris machines with the top end wiped out. They had a K&N filter on it, and the intake walls past the filter were covered in fine dust.

Uni seems to be a constantly good foam filter that isn't too restrictive, but filters the dirt out tremendously better the a K&N filter.

I used to be a firm believer in K&N, had in on my race quad to pullin truck, to my Dailey driver. Now from reading more and more, i learnd K&N is really not the way to go, i only run it now in one truck, and it dosent see any dirt offroad or dust. and it also has a pre filter skin, those help but still not a sure thing IMO

Wow! I'm glad I saw this thread. I already have a K&N Filter in my Sportsman 500. I'll keep using that until I finish off the charger that I bought.

What is the PN of the Uni Filter for a 2009 Sportsman 500 HO EFI?

I would also go with the UNI. Here's why...

There are basically three reasons to select an air filter...

1. You want to save some money.
2. You want increased performance.
3. You want better protection/filtration.

While paper filters do provide good filtration (especially with an outer cover), they become very inefficient quickly. The paper absorbs everything. If you want to see it for yourself, hold a new one up to a light, and hold one that has 100 miles or so on it up to a light. Considering they are pretty expensive from the dealer, if you want to keep your quad running efficiently, they are not the best option.

If you run a K&N, you really should run the outerwear cover. With the cover, they do provide decent filtration, but any so called "performance gains" are negated. As a matter of fact, unless you do a LOT of other performance mods, you are not going to see any measurable gains in performance from any air filter (with or without an outer cover), and even then it will be minimal. Plus, cleaning, and re-oiling a K & N correctly is a bit tricky. So, considering they are initially more expensive (along with the cleaner & oil), they may not be the best option.

The UNI (or Twin Air, or No-Toil) type filters provide excellent filtration that stays pretty consistent over a longer period of time than paper filters. They also provide decent air flow. So, at least you don't loose much performance over a period of time. Considering that UNI filter kit is relatively inexpensive when you consider their longevity, the above makes them an excellent choice.

If you decide on the UNI, I would get two. That way you always have one cleaned/oiled and ready to go.
