To K&N or not K&N... that is the question

I am trying to decide if I should order a K&N filter for my new '12 500HO. I have always ran K&Ns in all of my toys. However, now I am a bit more conservative and don't want to damage anything. I have been reading by some that K&Ns let fine particles enter the engine and could potentially lead to engine damage, while others say that they are fine. What is/are everyone's experiences with these filters? Should I K&N or Not?

I've been using K&N's for about 6yrs. and really haven't had any issues with them so far.I would be in the poor house if I were buying stock filters we ride in a very dusty location,I do run the stock prefilter over these filters and clean them about every 3rd ride or sooner if needed, just depends on the riding conditions. also I put a thin smear of petroleum jelly around the opening helps seal out fine dust plus the filter slides on easier

Did you notice any performance improvement with the UNI? The K&N's have always given me quite noticeable gains in throttle response and HP.

A pre-filter is a must with the K&N, otherwise, go for it if ya want. I do like Uni's though...too.

i got one on all my toy's But a pre-filter is also on all of them! and Trust me it's worth the $30.00 or so more!!!!!!
Also on your 2012 500 , you can mod the airbox inlet pipe (top of the airbox look where the pipe is pluged in.. you will see what needs to be done.) to give it some more air.
